The beginning of 2013 has gone by in a flash, I hardly can believe it's the end of February already. Time flies when you're busy, or I guess at least when you have kids...I'm sure most of you know how right that is. They have schedules now and it's a rush to always do the next thing. Over here at our house, January was filled with potty training, baby showers, meetings and getting sick somewhere in between everything. I swear, that bug or whatever you wanna call it, kept us inside and disinfecting everything. Bleh!
On the potty training front, Ben is doing well. We started slowly, before Christmas with his behavioral therapists and only during the 2 hour session. I would sometimes do it on the weekends for half the day, we just wanted him to get the idea of sitting on the toilet without it being a fight. I inevitably was scared out of my you-know-what, at the idea of potty training him. It is a tedious task for any parent, but with our schedules, my schooling, therapy, visits with dad and lack of Ben's communication...it was something I didn't really want to take on. So many people were always like, "Oh, but if you do you won't have the stress of diapers and the extra cost." Well--for me, I could care less about changing diapers (not that I absolutely love it) but I've just been accustomed to this. But yes--I do want him potty trained and I know it is a self-help skill he needs to learn. So what I decided to do was not set any unrealistic expectations...I wasn't going to expect that he be potty trained quickly. I knew it was going to take time and I was not going to stress myself out about any of it. I was going to go with the flow. Literally.
And ya know what? He is awesome. He has done his business in the toilet and even stays dry for up to 45 minutes. He is doing so well and I am so proud of him! Don't get me wrong, he is still in diapers...but he is on his way. It's pretty awesome.
And if you haven't guessed already...I love Instagram. I love that I can post pictures on the fly and actually...I like it even more than Facebook. If you have an Instagram and want to follow my incessant picture taking, you can follow me here @sara_snaps.
And I just figured out...Ben loves is my little yoga master. His handstands are pretty awesome.
As for myself, to say I like school is a major understatement. I am still in love with it. I mean, really, sometimes I can't believe how incredibly lucky and fortunate I am to be doing what I am doing. As my 2nd year...oh my gosh!...my 2nd year has begun, I've started all of my more design focused courses; drawing, color theory, textiles, space planning, etc. It's pretty rad and I feel more like myself more than ever.
Valentine's was super sweet. This was Elizabeth's 1st Valentines at school. She was so helpful when we filled them out for her class, she even signed each one for her classmates and church friends. She couldn't wait to take them to class. (See photo below).
I don't really decorate for Valentines, minus the home-made posters I've unconsciously begun doing for special occasions, I made these fun ones the night before. The kids love them and so do I.
As I was sitting and taking the kids' photos, Ben was engaged in his typical stimming, in which he repeatedly taps an object. His stimming is pretty intense and normally gets the attention of onlookers and those who don't know us. I never take notice if people are looking, I really could care less, it is just something he does in a way to self-regulate his environment. Reasons I am sure he will explain later in his life...but for now, it is something that he does and I was able to capture in the second. I don't know why but it melts my heart, be it that it's kinda cool that he's holding a candied heart or what. It is so undeniably honest and pure, I can't help but love everything about it.
The year has only just begun and I am excited for all that lies ahead.
There will be many more "firsts" and milestones, it should be a great year!
With Love~
Sara, Ben & Elizabeth
